 NEWSPAPER OF A PERSONAL, ALTERNATIVE OPINION

As the world gets ready to celebrate Chinese New Year, I want to wish all you readers out there a happy, blessed and prosperous new year. To quote Deng Xiaoping, to be rich is glorious. As a Christian, I believe that money is not the root of all evil, rather, the love of money is the root of all evil. If you have money, you can do a lot of good things, you can help people, you can cure the sick, from strangers to members of your own family to yourself.
Yesterday, I met up with a friend of mine and he immediately announced to me that he has just "joined my happy jobless" status. (Lately, I have become more famous for my Happy Jobless Guy website than for AsiaExplorers!) Like so many people I have met since I announced my Happy Jobless status, he has also been laid off by his company. He is toying with the idea of starting a coffee shop. While I told him that that is a great idea, and I would fully support him, I also advise him to plan and think it through thoroughly before making a move. The separation money he got from his company is something precious which will be too precious to waste, so think it through and do not make a wrong move.
Whether you are presently holding a job, wanting a change, or presently jobless, no time is a better time to build a foundation for yourself. I started AsiaExplorers in 2003, long before I became jobless, so that I can transition out of my job without a hiccup. Most people, however, are totally dependent on their jobs - to me, they are working without a safety net. When their job evaporates into thin air, so does their future. I cannot imagine why many people would buy expensive cars and expensive houses, and hang the noose of a heavy mortgage around their neck. I'd rather have money in the bank, and peace in my mind.
